A Test of Obedience

Wed, 03/10/2010 - 8:00pm

In Genesis 22 the Lord asked something "huge" of Abraham...to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice. Here is what the Bible says in verse 2...Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about." He told him what to do but not exactly where to do it. He said to go to the mountainous region of Moriah and that he would recognize the place when he got there.
As I have been contemplating future things and the vision of my life and the church I pastor, I thought about the moments that I have felt like I was being asked to let go of something precious to me. Maybe you have been through that as well. To end the life of a business...a relationship...a job path. Often we find ourselves in this dilemma between obedience and our own agenda and the hardest thing to do is to kill our agenda and let the obedient life live.
In 2000 the Lord inspired me to come back to Tulsa. I had a jobI was hired to do but I also had a feeling that it wasn't going to be a long lasting thing. I felt in my heart that I was supposed to pastor people. I was being sent into a land of churches to eventually start a church! Maybe that is what Abraham felt like being in a land of mountains and having to discern the right one. You see when we are obedient to what God asks, He will provide what is necessary to bring about the best possible result in what may have sounded like a very bad idea or been a confusing situation. At the very mountain that Abe chose, God provided a lamb...a sacrifice...a pleasant ending to a test of his obedience. The end result was that Abe feared the Lord and obeyed ALL of His commands.
There may be some things in your life right now that God is asking you to give up...to let go of. It may be hard because you don't know how to disconnect or detach. There may even be a part of you that wants to hold on for dear life. Let me say to you that what you are willing to let go of will determine what the Lord is able to let in to your life. For Abraham God brought a lamb...a substitute so that his son of promise could live.
For each person it may be something different. Your decision may not be life or death but it will have an impact on your spiritual life. God sent His Son Jesus to be the sacrificial lamb for you so that you could live life to its fullest and find joy and peace for eternity. By fearing the Lord and obeying His commands you can not only become part of the blessing that was given to Abraham, you can be a child of promise too! Which mountain is your lamb on? Just keep walking by faith...you will know it when you see it!

Vision

Tue, 03/09/2010 - 8:00pm

I have been thinking a great deal about vision casting and future things this week. People die because they lack vision. I do not want to be one of those casualties. In the book of Habakkuk it refers to the Lord answering the prophet as he was seeking some explanation to the current events. The Lord answered...
"Write this.
Write what you see.
Write it out in big block letters
so that it can be read on the run.
This vision-message is a witness
pointing to what's coming.
It aches for the coming—it can hardly wait!
And it doesn't lie.
If it seems slow in coming, wait.
It's on its way. It will come right on time.
A friend of mine once told me that when it is on the paper it is off the mind. He was encouraging me to write down things so that my mind would not get cluttered and overloaded. To this day, I journal and draw, make lists and take notes to help me catalog my thoughts and secure my ideas for eternity. I like this scripture from the Message bible because of the way it says it: write the vision down in BIG BLOCK LETTERS.
The fact is that God will lead us and place images in our mind of future things to help us move in that direction. Once you have caught a glimpse of glory, your spirit will ache to be closer and closer to it! And you can be certain that one day the things that the Lord has shown you will indeed come to pass. Though it is slow in coming, be patient. It IS on its way and it will arrive at just the right time!
Your dreams and visions from the Lord will most definitely show up in your life if you keep believing and keep walking in faith. Or running in faith! Read it on the run! Write it down! You are about to see something greater than you ever imagined!

Faith

Mon, 03/08/2010 - 8:00pm

Hebrews 11:1-2 The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It's our handle on what we can't see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors,
set them above the crowd.
One translation calls it the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things unseen. This is what faith is…evidence of what you cannot see…it’s the substance of all of the things you are believing for. This entire chapter is filled with men who had learned how to use FAITH…how to activate that substance and present that evidence. "Evidence" refers to the clues left at the scene of the crime that lead you to the one who committed the crime. Faith is what God leaves out there for you and I that if we follow it, will lead us back to Him. Always follow the evidence!
This TRUST in God is what pleases Him. It IS the foundation that we should use to build the life that He intended for us to live. How do you know if you are using FAITH? You will be involved in something that is absolutely impossible without the help of the Lord. Eight years ago I felt that He was leading me to be more intimately involved in the lives of people...to become a pastor. It was March of 2002 when The Landing Community Church was born. As I read through my journal notes about what I was feeling in my heart and spirit, I saw a picture in my mind and asked a friend to put on paper. The bible says to write down the vision so others can read it! How do I know I am using FAITH today?
Because this image is what the Lord has called me to move towards and it simply cannot happen unless He brings it to pass. I am trusting Him to lead me to people with the land and the experience to build a place where people can truly see God turn their dreams2destiny! Using this faith daily is what makes my life worth living! What are you using your FAITH for today?

Take Courage

Fri, 03/05/2010 - 8:00pm

Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”- Joshua 1:9
These are the words of the Lord to Joshua right after the loss of his mentor, Moses. When life changes abruptly before us it can have a negative impact on us. We can begin to feel that things can never be good again. Then, somewhere after the pity-party and self-doubt we get the Word from God and its then that everything changes.
Joshua was told two things: don't be scared and don't be discouraged. When we dis-courage we open ourselves up to high levels of doubt and a spirit of unbelief. To inspire Joshua the Lord gave him a reason to not be discouraged: the Lord said I will be with you wherever you go! It's easy to TAKE COURAGE when you know that the Lord is with you all the way.
So whatever you are in the middle of right now, don't allow fear to rise within you. So be strong and TAKE COURAGE. Stand in the midst of the storm with the knowledge that the Lord is right there with you every step of the way!

Be in the Moment

Thu, 03/04/2010 - 8:00pm
Psalm 3:3 But You, O LORD, are a shield for me,
My glory and the One who lifts up my head.

Yesterday we discussed the positive affirmations we can make about who we are in Christ's eyes. All of this is possible because of todays verse. Why do we have hope in hopeless situations? Let's look closer...

Lord you are MY shield (protection). All around me…I am completely covered by the power of the Lord. On my right and my left, ahead of me and behind me. No weapon formed against me can prosper for I am unable to be penetrated!

Lord you are MY glory. David was a prominent man with status and position. Yet he knew that his identity and his value was not in his job or military rank…His validation came from God! Your identity is not tied to your past…your value is not tied to your performance…He is YOUR glory…your validation comes from Him not people! You are divinely defined!

Lord you are the One who lifts my head. In those days when the king lifted up your head it meant that you were accepted. You were once again restored to the place that you had been. On the other hand when the king put his foot on your neck, it meant that rather than lift up your head he was about to cut off your head!

David was “being in the moment”. He did not respond to the negative things they were saying. He talked to the Lord and reminded himself just who God was. When we remind ourselves who God is we can see ourselves as God does. We matter. We have hope because he protects us, he promotes us and he lifts up our heads…positioning us for the best possible success.

When you know who you are in God, being in the moment is the most exhilarating, faith-filled place you can be. What are they saying about you? It doesn’t matter! You are divinely directed and divinely defined!

Affirmation

Wed, 03/03/2010 - 8:00pm
"A declaration that something exists, or is true." It's the definition of the word AFFIRMATION. Many people today are not living up to their potential because they make the wrong affirmations. Whenever we say "can't" or "won't" or "couldn't" we are declaring those things to be true even though they may not be! The bible tells us to "be transformed by the renewing of your mind". We allow our thoughts to be aligned with what God says. When our mind is clear, then our words should match those thoughts. And the good news is that when the mind is on track and the words line up, the body will follow!
Let me give you a couple positive affirmations to use today. These are things that God says about you and they ARE true.
• I am a child of God.
But to all who have received him--those who believe in his name--he has given the right to become God's children … (John 1:12).
• I am a friend of Jesus.
I no longer call you slaves, because the slave does not understand what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because I have revealed to you everything I heard from my Father (John 15:15).
• I have been accepted by Christ.
Receive one another, then, just as Christ also received you, to God's glory (Romans 15:7).
You are a child of God. You are a friend of Jesus. You have been accepted. And when you affirm those things to be true you set yourself up to be in the will...an inheritance that God has sealed by His Holy Spirit for you...eternal life!
Your words will direct your steps. So what affirmations are you making today? What do you declare to be true. Say it again, I am a child of God, I am a friend of God and I am accepted by God!

A Cute Story...

Tue, 03/02/2010 - 8:00pm

The other day I attended an event for Tulsa area ministers regarding an event coming to our town. At the end of the evening, one of the gentleman stood up to close and shared a story that made me laugh all the way home. Today, let me share it with you. It's for those of you that are facing a mountain of blessings and overwhelming opportunity but seem to be stuck in neutral or afraid that you don't have what it takes to do what is required.
There was a little boy who had a chance to go visit the chocolate factory in Hershey Pennsylvania. (I've been there before so I can smell the chocolate as I share this story!) He was taken on the VIP tour which ended up in a room filled with every kind of chocolate that you could imagine! His eyes got big as saucers and his smile stretched from one ear to the other as he gazed upon this sweet, sweet mountain of chocolate. It was then that the tour guide said to him, "you can have all the chocolate that you want." After a few seconds, he said "but there is a catch." He continued, "you have to eat all of it right here in this room, you cannot take any of it with you."
Reverently the little boy removed his ball cap, bowed his head and prayed..."Lord, please give me a capacity equal to this opportunity before me!"
I have often felt like I was in over my head in many situations and I sure wish I had prayed that simple prayer! Our capacity is unlimited in God. Perhaps today you stand before a multi-million dollar deal, a new building project or home, or something that seems so magnificent but you are quite aware of the limitations you possess. You and I can ask God to give us the capacity that is equal to the opportunity. You are just smart enough to close that deal, just rich enough to purchase that home finish that building or pay off that church! With God, nothing is impossible and every knee...every thing has to bow at the name of Jesus...even chocolate!

The Sweet Spot

Mon, 03/01/2010 - 8:00pm

There are moments in your life when you can see God all around you. At The Landing yesterday I had some of those moments. During worship at our church I had the opportunity to baptize several folks. Later in that same service we had prayer time where people throughout the church wrote their struggles on a piece of paper and then came up front to nail them to a cross that was erected there for this Season of Lent. While they pounded nails into the cross a Chris Tomlin video called, “God of the City” played on the big screen.
As I watched the faces come up out of the water during baptism as new creations, washed by the water of the Word I was thrilled. As I heard the hammers pound nails in the silence of prayer I was moved to tears. As I looked upon the people with their hands lifted in praise professing that He is the God of this city I was energized to make a positive difference in my world for Christ. Every moment was a bit different. Every moment was filled with emotion. And every moment testified to the glory and power of God! All I could do was smile and say WOW, that was a special time!
I may be an idealist but I believe that if we could find our way into the sweet spot of God’s success, we can have days like this consistently. God longs to show himself to us in a variety of ways. He longs to led us, to help us succeed and to keep joy overflowing in our lives.
As we begin this week, lets ask the Lord to help us see Him in the simple things that are all around you. You may hear Him in a cry or see Him in an activity around you. Recognize where He is and you will find your sweet spot!

Every Blessing!

Fri, 02/26/2010 - 8:00pm

Ephesians 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
Today I am going to smile, lift up my head and say thank you Jesus for this wonderful word! I may not truly understanding it but I can BELIEVE it! I don't understand alot of things...like why we park in a driveway and drive on a parkway. Or why isn't "phonetics" spelled like it sounds? And some things really confuse me...things like if olive oil is made from olives, what is baby oil made from? Or if ignorance is bliss, why aren't more people happy?
All kidding aside, I am blessed. YOU are blessed...not just with some good fortune and luck. YOU and I are blessed with EVERY spiritual blessing in Christ! Key word...EVERY! There is a great deal of blessing from God to be thankful for today! So why don't you join me and smile, lift your head up and thank God for EVERY spiritual blessing in Christ Jesus!

Return to NEVERland

Thu, 02/25/2010 - 8:00pm

How much fight is in you? What would you be willing to do to be healed? I've been doing a series at church called Return to NeverLand. I'm going back to the place in my spirit where I NEVER give up and I NEVER back down!
I was thinking about the woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5 and how desperately she needed to be healed. She tried everything and used all her resources but was still sick. She heard that Jesus was coming. Multitudes were around him and following him. She ran towards the fight of her life!
She found a way to get through the crowd to touch his coat. As soon as you touched him, power was released to her. Jesus did not have to authorize it. Her faith opened the conduit for the blessing and the healing to come. There were many people surrounding the power of Christ. But only this woman who tapped into that power.
There is a difference between association and assimilation. Many people who are Christians associate with Him but fail to assimilate Him in their daily life. On that day in our scripture throngs of people were walking WITH Christ but only one was walking IN Christ! Her connection changed Christ's direction and brought her His affection.
Are you ready to fight through the layers of superfluous followers and those who "think" they have Christ to connect to His power?
Fight the good fight of faith! Never, never, never give up!

Enough.

Wed, 02/24/2010 - 8:00pm

ENOUGH. One of my favorite scriptures, actually favorite chapters is Ephesians 6 where it talks about the armor of God. I need armor because there are some crazy things that are thrown at me every day. Here's what it says...
Ephesians 6:13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
There is armor and then there is the FULL armor. To me, the full armor covers everything. God's got me covered. When I have this on I am protected and protected in such a way that I can stand in the midst of the battles and make it.
I am in the middle of some situations in my life that have been battles. I have fought and fought and just when it seems like I get out in front of the battle there is a new twist. I'm at the place now that our scripture talks about...having done all you can do...STAND. I have said, alright, enough is enough! It's that place where you are sick and tired of being sick and tired. That season where every nerve has been pushed to its limit. It's the point of no return. I'm done!
And praise the Lord that is where God takes over! He is "more than enough"...El Shaddai and He is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all that I ask, think or imagine! When I am at the end, He is only beginning!
Maybe you are right there with me today...enough is enough! Release the Lord to do what must be done to bring you to a place of victory by letting go of it yourself! Having done all you can do...it's time to just stand!

The bible talks to us about being "wise as serpents". There are two kinds of wisdom according to the Book of James...wisdom from God and wisdom NOT from God. The other day I was watching a commercial on television for a sleeping pill. It was the middle of the night so I guess it caught my attention. The commercial depicted a person in a deep sleep, enjoying rest and being refreshed with some beautiful music and a lovely little butterfly buzzing through the room. Towards the end of the ad was the "disclaimer". It was that legal part which releases the company from any possible dangers and side effects. I thought I was asleep and dreaming when I heard it and had to rewind it on my DVR to make certain my ears were working right. Here is what it said...(actual disclaimer language from the ad)
"Walking, eating, driving or engaging in other activities while asleep without remembering it the next day have been reported."
Suddenly, all of those walks in the park I had last week, all the lunches crazy conversations, all of those rush hour trips to the house that were like Daytona made sense! The people around me were all asleep!
Today its a very simple question. Are you pursuing the wisdom of God or are you walking, eating and driving around without remembering it the next day? Be sober, alert and watch your doctrine closely. And next time you are walking, eating and driving among crazy folks, just yell real loud...wake up!

Mission impossible? Nothing is impossible with God! I’ve heard it all of my life. You have too. The question is, do we believe that? Do we REALLY believe that? In Mark 10 you will find that verse where Jesus is talking about real life things…and then the rich young ruler is told how he can be saved…sell what you have…give to the poor…follow me…WOW, that’s a tall order! But remember…Nothing is impossible with God!
You see if we really BELIEVE that then we will act differently…we will talk differently…we will take risks that require faith! You know what I have learned about the “impossible”? Things are only impossible until somebody does it. Somebody is always breaking a record that others thought would be long-lasting. The fact is that records are broken by those that BELIEVE they can break them! I want you to take a look at that word today…BELIEVE…now let me highlight a piece in the middle that usually gets in the way of our belief system…BELIEVE. See it now?
Some of us only see the lie that the enemy has embedded within the belief! The lie is that you cannot win. The lie is that life is just too hard and you can be good if you want but being good won’t get you anywhere. The lie is that you don’t have enough talent…enough resources…enough time!
With God ALL things are possible! We just have to keep on pressing on. Start where you are and keep going. As Winston Churchill once said never, never, never give up! Be tenacious, fight the good fight of faith and tell yourself the positive things that God has said about you…you can do all things…you are more than a conqueror…you will have all that you need to do what He’s chosen you to do! Nothing…no thing is impossible with God!

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”- Romans 8:38-39
You and I have been hard-wired to believe in our Creator. We were made in the image of God.Yet so many people today have their wires crossed and look like the image of something that looks nothing like God. Reading this verse it would seem that there is absolutely nothing that has the power to disconnect us from the love of God...nothing that is except ourselves. Poor choices, negative words, poisoned thinking all have a way of breaking the love connection. The good news is that God gave us free will. The bad news is that God gave us free will! When we surrender our plans to follow His then we begin to strengthen and connect the wiring that God gave us. I have a will to win today because my desires are no longer just mine...they are His! That is why He always gives me the desires of my heart!
Today, realize that you are created in the very image of God. God doesn't make junk! He's pre-wired you for a supernatural connection. You are wired to win and tethered to Him!

I don't own a Toyota. I have been following the news about all of the troubles they are facing. First it was the news about the gas pedals and sudden acceleration. Now they are talking about the power steering problems and veering off the road. As I listen to all of this I think about many things. I wonder how many other manufacturers have troubles but it is never publicized. As a preacher I also see some spiritual lessons in all of this. I think about how we have the same kind of troubles in our lives.
Many times I have accelerated too fast for no reason and wound up in a place that I did not want to be in but was in nevertheless. It's almost as if the speed was out of my control. I have also found myself veering off the course that I was on and losing control of my life. It becomes harder and harder to steer. The faster I go the more chance I have of veering off course.
To stop speeding away recklessly and steering off the path, I have to do what Toyota is doing. First, admit that there IS a problem. Second, bring the vehicle (my life) back to the manufacturer so that the wrongs can be made right. Only then can progress be made in the right direction, broken parts fixed, and the journey continued. Toyota needs to get back on the road to recovery again. You and I do too!
Is the Lord sending out a recall notice to you today? Perhaps you should go back to the manufacturer and let Him fix whats broken so that you can move forward again. I'm not certain that Toyota will recover but I am absolutely sure that you can! You are more than a conqueror and you will succeed. Let Him repair and restore you today!

Ash Wednesday

Wed, 02/17/2010 - 8:00pm

Today is Ash Wednesday; it is the 7th Wednesday before Easter and the first day of the Lenten season. It’s called Ash Wednesday because worshippers used to place a cross of ashes on their foreheads as a symbol of humility before God…the mourning and sorrow at the death that sin brings into the world. Ashes were not offered to everyone, only those that made a public confession of sin and sought to be restored to the fellowship. We know that scripture says that we all sin and fall short of the glory of God. Thank God for His mercy extended to us and His grace that is sufficient for all of us.
As I child I heard the word Lent many times without really knowing what the significance was. People would ask, "what are you giving up for lent?" People would give up pepsi, television or chocolate...things that if we were honest, we could give up without much sacrifice on our part. As you go through this season from now until Easter, consider making a broader commitment to the Lord. Lent is about repentance; turning around, and going in the direction of Christ and away from sin. Lent is about life, not chocolate!
At The Landing, we will take things that we want to rid our lives of and write them on a piece of paper and then nail them to a cross that has been erected in the worship center until Easter. It will remind us that Jesus was literally nailed to the cross for our sins. He paid the price. On the Wednesday before Easter we will take these off of the cross and burn them signifying that they are no longer remembered and they all disappear in Christ!
Use this Lenten season to do your own soul-searching. Ask God to make Himself more alive to you so that He can show Himself through you. Prepare your heart and humble yourself and He will lift you up at just the right time!

God's Perfect Timing

Tue, 02/16/2010 - 8:00pm

There is something incredibly wonderful about perfect timing. Nothing produces successful results like being in the right place at the right time. The other day I was reading a verse that talked about the "waiting" process. Seems like I am always waiting on prayers to be answered...or am I? Maybe God's waiting on me? Look at this verse out of Isaiah 30:18...
So the Lord must wait for you to come to him
so he can show you his love and compassion.
For the Lord is a faithful God.
Blessed are those who wait for his help.
He is waiting on us in the first part, we are waiting on Him in the last part. Well, if He's waiting on me and I am waiting on Him, how will we ever meet? The issue is NOT about waiting but rather about doing. The Lord wants to be gracious to us and bring about His will in our lives. I like to imagine that the Lord is "longing" for me to come to the realization that I need Him and I must trust Him. As a father of three children, I know how it feels to wait on my children to make the right choices. Though I wait for them to decide, I am constantly moving towards them and setting things up to help bring that revelation to them sooner. Sometimes it may appear that my back is turned or that I don't care but as any father knows, this is not true. My main concern is for their well-being and their success. So I wait and at times they probably feel like they are waiting on me. But the bottom line is that there will come a moment when their desire is perfectly synchronized with my provision...perfect timing!
My timing is never perfect but God's always is. Someone once said that He is never early and He is never late...He is always right on time! Today, trust the timing of your heavenly Father. He knows what He is doing and He also knows what you are doing. You may feel like you are in the middle of a waiting game but I can assure you that He is doing all that He can to collide with your dreams and desires. When preparation meets opportunity there is great success. He longs to be gracious to you! Remember this...you are not growing apart, you are coming together! He is a faithful God!

Grace for the Place

Mon, 02/15/2010 - 8:00pm

Romans 12:4 "Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us."
Yesterday at The Landing's Valentines Day service I looked out at the variety of folks that make up our incredible congregation! We are one body that is made up of many members. What we notice right away is that we do not all do the same thing: we serve different ways. Yesterday we added some new parts to the body and placed them in different positions. It was awesome to see folks spread out through the church, using their gifts in such a way as to glorify the Lord. We have different gifts according to the grace that is given to us. That grace comes from the Lord!
Today, you and I need to be who we were created to be. God needs all of us and He needs us to get in the place that He set up for us to be in. He gave us "grace for the place" that we fit in His body; that is the church. You have a gift and you are special to Him. So be yourself and hold your head up high!

Love, Love Love!

Fri, 02/12/2010 - 7:27pm

Once Jesus was asked a question that many of us want to know..."Which is the first commandment of all?" 29 Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' F61 There is no other commandment greater than these." Mark 12
Most of us grew up in a "religious" life that showed us a more liturgical side to faith. People tried to teach us how to pray, what to wear, what we could and could not do...it was all part of learning the discipline. There were readings, and prayers and times to kneel and times to bow, times to sprinkle and times to dunk...it goes on and on! Most of the things we learned were probably the ideas and thoughts of those that taught us. I talk to people everyday whose only church experience is what they grew up in rather than what they grew in to.
When asked what was most important, the Lord said to love God, love your neighbor and love yourself! Love, love, love! All you need is love! Sorry Beatles, Jesus said it first...hope he is getting the royalties!
Love brings everything together. Love is part of the relationship and not religion we enjoy as believers. I encourage you today to explore for yourself what YOU believe. Why do you worship the way you do? Why are you going to your church? When people ask you about your faith, do you describe yourself as part of a denomination or as a devoted follower of Christ?
Love the Lord with all that is in you. Love your neighbors as you love yourself! That pretty much sums it up!

One Loaf

Thu, 02/11/2010 - 8:00pm

I was reading about some wonderful miracles that happened with Jesus and da boys.(his disciples) The stories are found in Mark 6 and Mark 8. Seems that great crowds of folks were gathering around to hear the teachings and they were in such a remote place that food was not available. The disciples wanted to send the people away so that they could get some food and chill. But Jesus wanted the people fed. The disciples pointed out to him that it would take many months worth of wages to have the funds to feed all of these folks. Can the church afford it? Can our treasury take the hit? Jesus said, "can the church?...YOU DO IT!" And then he asked them "how much bread do you have?" In other words, what is available right here and right now.
Two accounts: 5 loaves and two fish in one setting, 7 loaves and a few fish in the other. 5000 gathered in one and 4000 gathered in the other. Both times Jesus took what they had, gave thanks and blessed it and gave to the disciples for distribution. In both places everyone at ate till they were full. At one location there were 12 baskets of leftovers and the other 7 baskets.
After two incredible feeding frenzies like this you would think that the chosen few would have a clue. But as they left and were out on the lake in Chapter 8 it says that the disciples looked at each other and realized that they forgot to bring the bread! There was one loaf with them and Jesus used this one loaf to teach them again. He could have shook his head in amazement but he continued to help them to see the light. "Why are you so consumed by the bread? He was trying to teach them that the one loaf represent Him and when you have Him you don't need anything else. Even these forgetful students of His would continue to be blessed and prosperous because they stayed close to Him.
Perhaps you too are forgetful. Maybe you have made some mistakes, failed some tests and forgotten things that you should have learned already. The key to staying strong is to make certain you keep One Loaf with you...Jesus Christ...the bread of life! So the next time you are asked "how much bread do you have?" just remember, you have Jesus, the One Loaf and that is all you need!
